The Primary School

The International School Toulouse Primary School is committed to the Primary Years Programme (PYP) which is a curriculum framework designed for students aged 3 to 12 years. It is the first phase of an International Baccalaureate (IB) education. The PYP draws on research and best practice from a range of national systems with a wealth of knowledge and experience from international schools to create a relevant, engaging, challenging and significant educational framework for all children. The PYP offers an education that “aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect” in accordance with the IB mission statement. IST was authorised to offer the PYP in April 2018.

All members of the Primary staff inspire and challenge students to achieve their personal and academic potential. Through modelling the importance of lifelong learning the Primary teaching team help students to understand that reflection and action are essential tools in their learning journey. An inquiry based approach is used where teaching methods build upon individual understandings, knowledge and interests, emphasising how to learn and delve deeper whilst developing critical thinking skills.

We aim for our students to

  • develop the skills and positive attitude needed to meet the challenges of a fast-changing world

  • use a wide range of traditional academic and modern technological skills.

  • develop critical thinking skills, including the willingness to consider a range of options and select the most appropriate.

  • develop the skills necessary to make informed choices.

  • take an active role in their own learning, acting responsibly and reflecting on their learning

  • be provided with a foundation of essential concepts, skills, knowledge and attitudes leading to a deeper learning in responsible action.

We are committed to providing an environment which

  • promotes the development of each child’s individual potential

  • is caring, safe and stimulating for all.

  • is positive and where staff have high expectations of pupils.

  • fosters and promotes good behaviour for all students and eliminates all forms of discrimination, harassment and bullying.

  • fosters international links both within the campus with the Deutsche Schule Toulouse and with other local and international schools.

  • values kindness

  • encourages cooperative learning

  • has classrooms that are stimulating, bright and airy and contain an outstanding range of teaching resources

Weekly assemblies enable students to recognise, share and celebrate their learning and special events.

Outdoor learning is integrated into the Kindergarten timetable and the classes make regular use of the forest area across the road from school.

Fieldtrips play a vital role in helping students gain first-hand experience and enhance their learning experiences within the PYP.

The wide variety of fieldtrips and other activities have been carefully selected and designed to complement the curriculum in each Grade.
